A Victory for Common Sense

Conservative delight at Expensive parish council defeat

After many months of uncertainty, Wakefield Conservatives are pleased to inform you that Horbury residents will not be hit with a new tax to fund a proposed parish council. This is a victory for common sense – at a time when we are all tightening our belts the last thing Horbury needed was another costly layer of bureaucracy.

The vote clearly indicated what the residents of Horbury, Horbury Bridge and Horbury Junction thought about the application for a Parish council. With over 99.26% against and 0.72% (14 residents) in favour. This is the third time a petition has been submitted resulting in a clear indication that any future applications for a parish council will receive the same fate.

The application failed to access the added financial burden it would impose and what effect it would have on Families and OAP’s. Given that it can charge what ever the elected Parish Council wanted it to be. It would fail to reflect the wishes of the majority and be promoted by the few.

Local councillor, Graham Jesty, led the campaign against the proposal. He said: “Ever more politicians won’t solve Wakefield’s problems and now is not the time to hit people with another layer of taxation.”

Alex Story, Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Wakefield, supported Cllr Jesty. He added: "We know that most people don't work hard for fun. They work hard because they want to improve life for themselves and their families. We took a decision to campaign against the Parish Council proposal which would have been another layer of useless bureaucracy. We didn't feel people would want to pay another tax on top of their council tax just to create another talking shop.I’m delighted the overwhelming majority of you agreed with us.

Labour fails to address local issues

It is becoming ever more obvious that this current Labour administration doesn't know what it is doing whether internationally, nationally or locally. In our entire history, we have never had a government that has been so keen to dictate to us how to live. On the one hand, they tell us what to eat, what to drink, and can be said or not said; but on the other, it has let us all down in the things that matter, such as the upkeep of our parks. In short, this Labour government have been unable to spot the wood from the trees. Train loads of tax payers' money has been burnt on red tape and politically correct initiatives, diverting crucial resources away from our communities.

Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools, and Families, has been a key player in taking from the deserving to distribute to the undeserving; from the hard working to the shirkers, and from the victims to the culprits. This is self evident when we see the state of our local parks, notably in Green Park Horbury, which has been allowed to go into disrepair over the years. Where once we had a lovely place for our children to play, we now have a derelict playground smeared with graffiti and rusty swings.

However, slowly but surely, we, the Conservatives, are starting to make a difference. My colleague, Councillor Graham Jesty, has put a great deal of thought, imagination and time into raising awareness and funds to ensure that something can be done to reverse the decades of neglect that have blighted our green spaces. We stand for common sense. We want our taxes to pay for services that we can use, not for bureaucrats' lifestyle. We want to feel proud of our community and neighbourhood. We know you do too.  You can contact me on 07721 885 902 if you need any information.
